Caspar and SJ relaxing in the spare Alpha 4 hammocks
After a delicious dinner featuring banana fritters and custard for pudding, everyone hung out and chatted then headed for their bunks ready for another long drive for the Loop and some hard manual labour for Alpha 4! The next day the group had arranged with the local rangers to help dig up an elephant's skeleton known to be underground nearby, and as the Loop departed they were hard at work with pick-axes and shovels. (Unfortunately, it took a full two days of digging and the assistance of a JCB and a Caterpillar earth mover before they located the elephant. Even more unfortunately, once it was found it quickly became obvious that despite being dead and buried for over a year the elephant was not yet fully decomposed and gave off a nasty niff once un-earthed, at which point Alpha 4 beat a hasty retreat. They do now have a three-foot elephant bone at their camp site as a souvenir of the experience, however!)

The Loop's next stop was Alpha 2 in Batu Puteh. As the blog has already reported previously, due to heavy rains and high water levels Alpha 2 have had to evacuate their riverside campsite and set themselves up temporarily in the village goat shed. Although the river is now finally starting to drop, they are still at the goat shed at the moment, but it is hoped that the next group in Phase 3 will be able to return to the campsite. As the Loop discovered, it is actually not a bad little place - nice and dry, with a handy porch for cooking and storing muddy wellies.
Alpha 2 relaxing at the headquarters of MESCOT, their project partners
Despite the inclement weather, Alpha 2 have still continued to get stuck into their work and are building up plenty of muscles doing lots of lifting and digging at the eco lodge, where they have been laying paths and walkways. And it appears they're not tired enough from all that activity, as they're still finding time to fit in a bit of sport and this weekend they've got a football match scheduled with the community.
From Batu Puteh, the Loop headed on to Alpha 3 in Imbak Canyon. It was Martin's birthday so the Field Base visitors were greeted with great festivity and an enormous feast of Thai curry followed by Project Manager Skinner's now legendary bannoffee pie. After a slow start to the phase due to (yes, you've guessed it) the rain, Alpha 3 are now flying through their work on the suspension bridge and are hoping to complete the foundations by the end of this phase.
Andrew getting the Alpha 2 kitchen ready for breakfast - very early!
It was an early-ish night with very full stomachs, as some of the group were getting up even earlier than the Loopsters the next morning to go on a dawn walk with the rangers. Close behind, the Loop headed off at first light for the final leg of their journey, visiting Alpha 1 at Tampasak. As well as cracking on with the floor and wall supports for the Kindergarten, the group there has also found time to organse a sports day for the local kids. However, despite spending their days wielding tools and lugging heavy loads around their work site, puny Alpha 1 still lost the tug-o-war!

Finally, as you know Alphas 5 and 6 sadly can't receive a visit from the Loop as they are all out either trekking in the jungle or diving on Mamutik island. However, we are still in touch with them every day over the radios and can report that all is well. Alpha 5, first of all, have had a brilliant trek - the total opposite of the weather experienced by the trekkers in Phase 1, with scarcely a drop of rain! They've now moved across to Mamutik to complete their diving courses. Alpha 6, meanwhile, are just completing their trek and preparing to return to KK for Changeover - when the whole expedition gets back together, sorts out all the kit and swaps into new (and final!) Alpha groups for Phase 3.
There'll be another update on the blog as soon as the new Alpha groups are announced, so you'll know who is where for the final phase. Keep an eye out for that towards the end of the week...

Hi Will (Evans),

Yep...snow as well as rain, wind and so cold. The whole weekend is going to be awful weather. We went to Borough Market this morning, including Oscar, and had a good time getting pasta and having breakfast. Paula is coming over in a while to spend the night. So you'll be doing another phase shortly...hope to get more letters...they are so good! You get back on Jack's birthday and he's going to come over early that evening for a welcome home celebration as well as birthday bash. Hope you guys get some chocolate eggs! We all send you lots of love, Mom xxxoxxo

To Tom Hywel-Edwards (Alpha 3?)
Thanks for the phone call - it was great to hear from you even if you were buzzed by flying squirrels! Lots of snow here today but the land rover is coping with it.Sure you will love driving it when you get back - we will take you to the farm for you to have a go.
Hope the change over provides a bit of a rest and the opportunity to eat properly and wash some clothes. Diving in the Bahamas starts on 9th July if you are still interested. If so, I will reserve a place for you.
Lots of love from all the family at Cattespole. Love M,D Bert & Wills (who are both after your Easter eggs).
Hi Alice (Alpha 1),
Good to see another pic of you (in the tug-o-war). How did you manage to lose? I know there were a lot more of them, but they were only toddlers!
We’ve had a great week walking in Swaledale. About 70 miles in five days – not bad for a couple of old codgers… Left ydy (Fri 21st) in a blizzard but Herman coped brilliantly. Could even get snow in Brighton so may need a 4x4 to get to the corner shop!
Hope kindergarten project went well and changeover works out OK. Look forward to hearing all about your adventures.
Both still missing you lots.
Loads of love from MAD.

PS In case you haven’t heard, here’s last weekend’s rugby results: England beat Ireland 33-10 (Jonny dropped in favour of 19-year-old Danny Cipriani – Mum says he’s a very nice boy too!); Italy beat Scotland 23-20 with last minute drop goal; Wales beat France 29-12 to win championship unbeaten (Grand Slam).
PPS Does that BT international phone card work?
PPPS We couldn't access our ntl webmail abroad either. You could try a google mail account as that worked.
PPPPS Mum says shame you're not here ‘cause my eyebrows have gone mad…
Hi Lucy (Hitchen)
Happy Easter. Heard you were ill, hope you have recovered and are enjoying diving now. The trip looks really amazing. All is well here but so cold, windy and wet. Actually had snow yesterday and today but not enough to cover the ground. We are all thinking about you. J will check out the blog later to see what you are doing next. Take care.
Love from The Taits
Hi again malcolm! Still no photo! Are you really there? we are beginning to suspect not.
Had dinner with Robert in Oxford. he is very fine and studying to do maths at Reading when he gets the necesssary A levels. He has a lovely girlfriend - Toria - (for Victoria) - very pretty and highly intelligent- wants to study medicine.
We are now back home. Treacle came in wet and very cold - it's been snowing here and the weather for easter is generally foul. We went through gales, hail, rain, snow and fog on the way home. Must be global warming.
Love from all here.
Dad
Hi sieb, gaaf een foto van je groep te zien. Leuk! And great news, Wortel gave birth to four kittens. And their names so far Spruitje, Peentje, Tomaat en Courgette. They are red, black, grey and a copy of wortel (peentje). Maandag 2e paasdag natuurlijk claar's verjaardag. Alweer 21!. We keep on looking at the weblog. It is great to read what all the alpha groups are doing. We hope that the weather conditions get better. And have a good football. Gezellige pasen. Take care. Heel veel groeten van iedereen hier. xx mam
Thanks loop vehicle for the picture of Alpha 2 of the goat shed! Imani! You look happy and healthy in the photo - we were half expecting to see the discovery of the Malaysian Big Foot from your description! Feeling a bit concerned by your trek and dive phase as you have after all, won the award for being "most unsteady on your feet"! Keep safe and Big Hugs. Won't embarrass you any further, Ma and Pa
Tom Lowe Alpha 5
Hi Thomas! The trek sounded better than you expected in spite of the diahorreoa, sore throats and vomiting! You will be having a fab time diving now hopefully. I've just returned from Uluru which was absolutely awesome! To Lynn in Hong Kong next on tues, which will be fun though I love Oz and will miss it such a lot! Weather in Uk awful apparently, snow and rain and cold. Enjoy that heat while you can! Loads of love Mum xxxxxx

Yo Mic, Alpha 1
Just picked up your email. Great to hear from you but sorry to hear about the shoulder. Try not to repeat it on the trekking/diving phase! Everyone got the postcards and all were really pleased and surprised - they could read your writing!! All is well here. Dom says "Glad to hear you're enjoying it, you slag" and "I've eaten all your Easter eggs". Take special care, and if I don't hear from you before, let me know when you get to Bangkok. Lots of love, Mum
P.S. Mic, Good to see you on the tug-of-war photo. I identifyed you, hopefully correctly, by the brown T-shirt and white bony knees! xx Mum

Went on the lash with Peelie last night - he's working hard (for him) so hope it pays off. He sends loads of love. Planning a trip to Morrocco with Louise in July but hopes you will catch him before he goes.
