A busy week in Imbak Canyon

As reported in the last blog post, industrious Alpha 3 down in Imbak Canyon have been flexing their muscles for the last week or so, getting stuck into some serious heavy lifting for the new suspension bridge. They haven't been too busy to give us an update on what they've been up to though, and so - in their own words - here's a news summary courtesy of Chrissie and Kate, the Alpha 3 'news hounds':

We had to shift the upright beams for the bridge up the hill to the trail. They're made of 'iron wood' from the Belian tree. It took 20 of us to complete the task as the beams were 13ft long and 2ft by 2ft in diameter.

We split into two groups on either side of the river to work on the bridge foundations. Group One were digging up the sand and gravel from the river and then winching it across. Group Two were then mixing the concrete to complete the foundations. It was hard work but they're finally done, - five weeks ahead of schedule!

Some of the group helped to clear away the landslide that has been blocking the road between Ranger Camp and the worksite for the last couple of months. Then we moved the timber to the worksite: 60 2x4 iron wood planks are pretty heavy. We also winched the metal suspension cable over the river. It is extremely long and heavy and we had to drag it out of the gorge, which took a lot of "One, two, three, PULL"s until it was long enough to secure to a tree to stop it falling back into the river.

Over the next few days the upright beams will be moved into place and cemented into the foundations. Meanwhile, we are feeling very settled and at home in Imbak, even producing home-baked treats from the camp kitchen, including chocolate-filled doughnuts and fresh bread. The group have also trekked to see more of the area, with a short walk from the camp to see an enormous Belian tree (estimated by the rangers to be over 1000 years old) and a longer trek up Repeater Hill to a spectacular viewpoint looking out across Imbak Canyon.

Before the end of the expedition the whole group is hoping to complete the Bucit Beruang trek, which will take us up to the summit of the North Ridge. From there, we will be able to see the mist coming up through the trees, the sunrise and the surrounding palm oil plantations, which once threatened the Imbak Canyon Reserve.

Hi Alice and all Alpha Threes.

Great blog update and pics. Really impressed by your efforts and glad to hear you’re managing to get a few home comforts.
By the time you read this, it’ll all be over (bar the partying). Hope you achieved all you set out to do.
Really looking forward to talking to you at the end of the trip.
Lots of love – MAD XXXXXXXXXXXXX
PS Martin Johnson (ex-World Cup winning captain) set to get the England manager’s job. Brian Ashton’s future unclear after the team’s disappointing Six Nations showing.

Hi Alice Small (alpha 1)
It´s your twinny here! I have tried for weeks to remember my password, but i have totally forgot.
I really hope you are happy and having such a great time :) I cant express how much i miss you Al, EVERYONE i meet i tell them all about you and i think about you everyday. Actualliy, i´ve made really good friends with 3 boys from Surrey who are going to be in Thailand in May/ June- they wanna meet up with you!! They are so fun and always make me laugh.
I had the craziest time in Rio De Janerio, seriously you HAVE to go one day- you will love it! So much partying and i met so many great people in the hostel we were in!
Guess you have heard all about Frontier?! So many tears have been shed over them, its such a disappointment :( Oh well, i cant dwell on it too much.
We are currently on an island called Ilha Grande, it´s covered in jungle and has the clearest water i have ever seen. It´s truely beautiful. Our hostel is built over the ocean, o we fall asleep listening o the sea and wake up to the most gorgeous view. I love it here.
We even went on a 13km trek yesterday... In a tropical storm, wearing flip-flops! Haha, i hated it. Have been kayaking to secluded beaches today.
We are off to Peru in 2 days!!! I cant wait, also oing to miss Brazil. It´s such a vibrant country.
I have been checking this blog all the time, even saw a photo of you standing by a Raleigh jeep! That was so weird to see you, i cried a lot.
Miss you more than you know and i cant wait to have a LOOONNNGG conversation about everything (i.e Waldo!)
Love you so much, you are very precious to me Alice. Keep smiling xxxx

Just adding this to the alpha 3 update from Imbak Canyon where they appear to have done some good work picking up from where you left off. Pity we didnt get such good photos from your stretch!

Not sure when you get back from your trek but hope you get some chillin time and manage to fight your way onto a cpu to send us an update of your travel arrangements. Are you ok for malaria tabs etc? Let me know if there's anything we need to do this end.

All's well here but a bit tame compared to your life at the moment. I took Ka-rlos out for a spin last night - to Canons Ashby and back - and nothing fell off as far as i could tell. Thinking of selling the jeep as its a bit OTT for town so might commandeer your little PRM in the meantime and get a replacement when the house sells.

Anyway my baby girl, get in touch as soon as you can. Love ya xxxx Meemees (+ muds from Huck)

Hi Anna of Alpha 1,

This is Mum again. Thanks so much for your quick email; let me know when you have decided what you are doing. How is the work on the kindergarten going? By the time you get this it will be the opening ceremony or nearly - I hope it all went well. I am very proud of all you have achieved. I hope you had a fantastic time too - I've been following the blog, obsessively, and it looks amazing out there.

Now, Dad is trying to sort oput your finances, and for the banking he needs the long number on your debit card. Can you find a way of getting this to us?

Ian went for an interview at Morrisons yesterday, and said it went quite well, and that he'll know the outcome within a week. He also thought he'd put in a CV to the Big Apple. He should; he spends most of his time there anyway.

I got both cats in yesterday. Shadow followed me when I was roaming the streets at midnight yelling Spot! (it's the neighbours I feel sorry for) and they both had a brief spat on the pavement. But Spot followed me home, had a bit of ham, inspected the facilities, and left. I wish she'd move back in.

Grandma and Grandad visited Dad in the week. We spoke about you. They are very interested in all your travels. They have both been to Singapore on their way to Australia. Grandad had stopped over there in the late 50s early 60s, when it had been undeveloped. He was surprised to find how it had changed.

I hope you like Singapore. The books I gave you make it sound marvellous. The night safari sounds good fun.

I hope you are well, and very happy, and pleased to have completed so much. Please don't forget the card number, and tell me what you are doing after the expedition finishes. I'm looking forward so much to hearing from you, and to seeing you again.

Lots of love,

Mum.

Hello Jasper,( Alpha 4)

We've just got back from Tunisia, lightly bronzed, but no doubt very pale and puny compared to you!
Longing to see the photos of the Alpha 4 animal party and to see what guise you went under. A koala??
I hope we'll speak to you when you get to Australia next week. Safe journey. I'm already worried about you missing flights, losing tickets, etc, etc, but guess this is the mother's lot in life.
lots of love

Hey babe, just a quick message to tell you that i´m missing you more than ever.
We´re off to Peru tonight!! Crazy stuff. Hope you are enjoying your final couple of weeks with Raleigh? And are ready for your travels around Thailand?! You will love travelling properly, it´s so free and relaxed. I can´t wait for you to start travelling because it means we can have constant contact! YAY!
Kat has found flights to Zante for 40 pounds (one way) and is still really keen, i wanna go out there (even if it´s only for a few weeks) at the end of June! PARTY!!
Kirsty wrote to me quickly and says she´s travelling India until early June and then flying over to Thailand with a girl she met from Raleigh- random but cool!
Remember i love you so much forever and ever and ever and ever.

Hi Jack
I think you must have finished the trek by now and should be diving and hopefully relaxing and partying too. Hope it's still amazing. You're so lucky to have been involved in such interesting projects and to have had so many amazing experiences.
It was good to see the photos of the current group in Imbak Canyon as we could imagine you there, it looks incredibly exhausting work. Shame there weren't some good photos of your group when you were there.
Please make sure you have at least a few photos with you in them as so far I've only seen you in 2 photos plus the group one.
Will has an appointment at the fracture clinic tomorrow, hopefully he'll be told that the cast can come off after 4 weeks rather than 6.
It's 8.00pm and Will is up at school finishing off his Graph comm. assignment which has to be handed in tomorrow!
Can't believe you'll be home this time next week. G & H are not going to go to D of E as we all want a family meal to celebrate your return - that's if you're not asleep!
Make the most of your last few days, it will seem like a dream once you're back here in the snow and frost (seriously!).
Try to call when you get to Heathrow. You will be sampling the delights of the recently opened new terminal, terminal 5. It's been a scene of chaos there with cancelled flights, lost luggage and computer failure but hopefully it will all be working well by the time you come through next week.
Everyone here sends their love and we're all looking forward to seeing you.
Love Mum xxxxxx

Hi Sieb, je bent nu aan je laatste dagen bezig. Is het duiken al afgelopen? Ik ben reuze benieuwd wanneer we van je horen. Hier alles as usual. Claar komt morgen naar oegstgeest. We moeten de valk halen. Verder gaan we ruimen. En morgenavond geeft Jules een borrel in Zeist. Gaan we misschien wel even heen. Zondag met opa naar concert. Genoeg te beleven. De tortellini's groeien als kool. We zijn ze alle vier al kwijt. Geniet nog van je laatste dagen en tot aan de telefoon. Big hug xx mam

Hi Will (Evans),

I keep forgetting my password and this is my third attempt to send you a blog....UUURRRGGGH! Very excited about seeing you on Thursday morning. Have just made you a chocolate cake. Oscar is staying in this weekend and out next. Fulham beat Reading 2 nil yesterday so hopefully they won't be relegated. Jack is coming over tonight to watch the final day of the Master's with Neil. Tiger isn't in the lead. Hope you got the iPod and all our letters. The London marathon was today and there were about 6 Masai warriors running to raise money for clean water in their village. They have been going all over London in their traditional clothes and I saw them at Waterloo on Thursday when I was on my way up to Archway. Not sure how they coped with the cold. Have a great trip home and can't wait to see you on Thursday. I love you, Mom xoxoxoxoxo
